The dryland rice (gogo) that we planted in Cibitung Kulon Village, Pamijahan District, Bogor Regency
SURYO RISET INA.COM - When you hear the word "rice," you might imagine vast expanses of flooded rice paddies. But, did you know, SRI friends, there's a type of rice that grows without paddy fields and standing water? Here it is: Padi Gogo, a food hero from drylands!
Gogo rice is a variety of rice that is cultivated in dry land (not in rice fields), such as fields, hillsides, or rainfed land. Unlike paddy rice, which requires irrigation and continuous water supply, Gogo rice actually thrives in conditions with limited water.
This rice is often cultivated in mountainous or hilly areas and has become a mainstay for farmers in regions with scarce water sources. It is not surprising that Gogo rice is often referred to as resilient rice that is friendly with nature.
Why is Padi Gogo a worthy choice? Here are its advantages:
✅ Drought-resistant – Suitable for areas with low rainfall or lacking irrigation.
✅ Simple planting system – Can be planted using the tugal method (planting holes), without excessive tillage.
✅ More water-efficient – No need for waterlogged conditions like rice paddies.
✅ Good harvest potential – If managed well, the results are on par with irrigated rice.
✅ Tolerant to certain pests and diseases – Some Gogo rice varieties already have resistance to major plant disturbances.
Although it has many advantages, Padi Gogo also faces challenges. One of them is that the harvest yields are still fluctuating if not accompanied by the right cultivation techniques. The soil in dry land is also often poor in nutrients.
But don't worry! There is now a lot of technology and innovation from agricultural experts—including from IPB University—that helps Gogo rice farmers. This includes the selection of superior varieties, the use of biofertilizers and soil microbes, as well as environmentally friendly conservation planting systems.
PT. Suryo Riset Indonesia, along with its partners, continues to conduct research and development to support more efficient and sustainable Gogo rice cultivation. Several innovations have already been developed, including:
🌱 Superior drought-resistant rice varieties with high yields
🌿 The use of soil microbes to enhance fertility and fertilization efficiency
📱 Digital technology such as the IPB DIGITANI app for direct consultation with agricultural experts
Gogo rice is a real solution for food security in dry land. With a touch of innovation and the spirit of Indonesian farmers, Gogo rice can be an important part of a more resilient and environmentally friendly agricultural system in the future.
So, SRI friends, let’s support the cultivation of Gogo rice as one of the quality local food alternatives. Because behind its simplicity, Gogo rice holds the power to realize adaptive and sustainable agriculture.
